Asthma

One in five of us get asthma before we are 18 years old. It is an illness that blocks the airways to your lungs and can make breathing very difficult.

1 in 5 children have asthma

50% more boys have asthma than girls.
Children with asthma often also have Eczema, a skin condition that dries the skin and makes it sore.

Asthma attacks can be caused by many things:

  • Coughs and colds
  • Allergies eg to grass or pollen
  • Exercise
  • Cold weather or a sudden change in temperature
  • Excitement
  • Cigarette smoke

It doesn't have to stop you from living a full life: there are many successful sportsmen and women who have asthma, but getting the right treatment is very important.

People with asthma often have special inhalers, or puffers, that blow the medicine into them through the mouth and then into the lungs. They should carry out the doctor or nurse's instructions very carefully. Some children must take puffs several times a day but others just need a puffer in case they have an Asthma attack.

What you should do if someone has an asthma attack
If someone has an asthma attack, keep calm, sit the person down, never lie down, and get help at once. They will probably need their puffer.
