Health Visitor

Annette Jones-StewardName: Annette Jones-Steward

What do you do?
I help parents and families make sure that their kids are healthy and ready for school. We do checks on babies and toddlers and give them their immunisations.

What is your background?
I was born in Jamaica and went to Primary School there. I came to London when I was 11 to go to secondary school. My father was a labourer, my mum worked in a hospital making tea for the patients and cleaning up.

How did you become a Health Visitor?
First of all you become a nurse. I had always wanted to be a nurse. I told my careers advisor but she thought I should be a teacher! I did my GCSE's then went to a hospital to train. I was a nurse for 20 years.

What qualifications do you need and how long does it take?
You have to be a nurse first then you go back to college to learn how to be a Health Visitor and do more training.

What is the most difficult thing about the job?
Getting everything right in a world where people sometimes have lots of problems.

What is the best thing about the job?
Having the time to really talk to people and help them. When I was a nurse I was always in such a hurry.
I like listening to people.
